I think, it's not what @louis_f is after, but what the teacher is after... for example if this were an introduction to further use of the String class, then using sprintf() wouldn't provide the necessary experience. I think in this case, just better to "go with the flow".
It sounds like most of the students are going to come up short on this assignment, like they did on the last one... so no big worries for Louis...
