Delay between a sensor and solenoid

Hi,

I'm making a watering system which uses a sensor a to turn on the solenoid valve and i have ran into a few issues:-

  1. The sensor cannot be constantly measuring so i need a cooling off period
  2. I need the solenoid needs to turn for some time and then turn off.
    Please send some examples of code since it is easier to understand.
