Detect remote control car

Hi all,

Just u quick question to think about:
I'm building an escape room where 2 remote control cars have to be parked in the right parking spot. I am looking for a way to detect if the remote control car is parked in the spot. The problem is that the parking spot is about 4 or 5 times the size of the car so i have a bigger area to cover with detection. Besides that, the car park is already build with 18mm thick wood and i would prefer for the wires not be visible / easy to hide.
The idea im working on now uses read switches (3 or 4 per parking spot), and magnets glued to the bottom of the car. Because of the clearance of the car, i can not use magnets the size i would like so its not working trough the wood.

Does anyone have a better idea to detect the cars?

HOW BIG are the cars and the parking spots, mm2? cm2? m2?

Thanks… Tom…

What is the difference between the two cars?

I'm thinking of colour sensors - maybe a few to cover the whole parking area, as long as a piece of car is under one of them you can tell if you get the correct colour.
