detecting when power is on, to a record player.

Hi

I have a record player that when I turn it on the arduino is aware, I will then transmit IR codes to my reciever mute TV etc.

But I am at a loos what device I need to sense when the player has been turned on. Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome.

thank you

a non-intrusive solution could be, to let an LDR "look" at the power lamp.

let an LDR "look" at the power lamp.

This sounds a bit hit and miss also I am redecorating the house, I am carving walls up etc so I can be intrusive.

I was hoping that some form of reed switch that could detect the power flowing would exist but I can't find anything.

I think Peter meant that his suggestion wouldn't be intrusive to your player, not your domain. I agree with his suggestion. A very inexpensive, simple device and two wires; about as easy and simple as it gets. - Scotty

Exactly.

If that is not satisfying, my next option would be to open the player, and attach an optocoupler to the power lamp.

But as long as it is a question with depressingly little real information, we can only give a general and blurry answer.

Perhaps a current sensor?

If there is current, it is on, if not, not?

What is a "record player"...

I am not sure what is "hit or miss" about it, but you can create a sleeve with electrical tape to block the ambient light.
