Hey guys,
Originally tried to flash a bootloader onto a project i was working on, i had an atmega328-au smd chip, so I edited the avrude.conf file to allow it to recognise its signature.
I have attached the code in the comment below as it was above the 9000 characted limit.
The device uses a ceramic resonator, so the crystal should not be the problem...
I had no luck trying to get any response from the device, so i swapped out another atmega328p-au chip for the original. I still am getting the 0x0000 error message.
At least originally It was possible to read back the signature of the device. Now I am getting nothing at all...
Any ideas?
Here is a link to the schematic https://github.com/kveilands/SAAB-CDC/blob/master/Bluesaab%20RN52%20v4.1%20sch.pdf
And here is a link to the pcb https://github.com/kveilands/SAAB-CDC/blob/master/Bluesaab%20RN52%20v4.1%20pcb.pdf
I am getting 3.3v on the vcc pins of the atmega, not really sure what to do next....
Any advice??
Cheers,
Viv

Ah well! getting just a little bit more annoyed!!! >:(
I'm not a guy! So my input is invalid?
"Guys" to refer to a group of mixed genders is widespread, at least in some regions. Where I live, men and women use "guys" to refer to groups of either gender in a friendly manner. It's very strange to see people taking offense to this.
It sounds like bad resonator to me. There are versions of the Arduino as ISP sketch that output a clock signal on pin 9 of the programmer Arduino. Here is one: GitHub - adafruit/ArduinoISP: A fork of the ArduinoISP that has 8mhz output clock
You can attach that signal to the XTAL1 pin of the target chip, and see if it becomes responsive. If it does, then look closer at the resonator and its traces and soldering, for shorts, opens, bad components, etc.
Perhaps I missed them but I don't see any bypass capacitors on the MCU pins.
If they are in fact present, then make it obvious on the schematic and ignore the following rant (or whatever it is).
Why Bypass? Well, it turns out power distribution is sort of like bridge building.
The tension wires have distributed inductance and capacitance and if driven with even a slight flutter at the right frequency can resonate most, unfortunately. In a bridge, the cables carry force while on the board the traces carry current. The mathematics of springs and force is like inductance and current. If I wanted the bridge to not fall down I could sprinkle weights along the tension wires (not evenly) to change the resonance to a place outside the driving force frequency. Well, guess what the bypass is, yes it is like a little weight. It is best to place one at the end of each power distribution trace (each IC is generally a near enough approximation). Good luck with your bridge.
