DFPlayer Mini: Does this sketch always need USB to PC?

I've been studying dozens of sketches about this MP3 player module, and am now trying to grasp the one below. Have I wildly missed something obvious, or is it exclusively only usable while connected to the PC (which I can do OK)? If it can be independent, then could someone please show me how please?

Yes, I believe you have.
The sketch gets commands from the Serial object.

Or maybe I've misunderstood something.

Thanks for the fast reply. It's reassuring as it means I just need to work out how!

I appreciate it's difficult for anyone without the module, but could you or anyone at least suggest where in that complex sketch I should probably add the appropriate code please? For example, to play each track? IOW, where could I use the 's' command to start, followed by say '>' to play next track? Or an even simpler example of using the 'v20' command to set volume to 20.
