i have and old diecimila board arround

i was wondering if i could change the pic to a 328p with an uno bootloader and use it as an uno board.

anyone done something similar before? is there any drawback or problem i should expect?

The 168 and 328 are pin compatible so should work. You will need to either buy a 328 with bootloader already burnt or have some other arduino or programmer to burn a bootloader on a new 328 chip.

thanks i already did it, and i'm giving it a test drive. i bought blank chips and burn them using arduino as an ISP.

so far no issue,
