Dimmer control circuit

I want to create a dimmer circuit. ie the Arduino controls the intensity of a standard AC bulb over time. The method of control (PWM vs DAC) will depend on the hardware circuit, and the light should not flicker. I was almost thinking of buying a rotary dimmer switch and attaching a servo to it but I figured there had to be a better way. Any ideas?
