Display needed for GPS project

Im a very beginner with DIY electronics& Arduino but i have tried to search and learn as much as I can. Last night I ordered my first setup of Arduino UNO board (and some other cool stuff :slight_smile: ) for a gps project.
I found almost the identical project which I think helped me a lot to getting started(Arduknot Dinghy Speed Display) BUT im going to put it a little future and I hope the result would look something like this http://www.panbo.com/Nexus_NXR.jpg

The main target is to have big, around 2.3" four digit speed log which would also show heading ect ect. I would also like to have it in two rows like Nexus.

The question is it possible to build a screen like that with 9x 14 segment (around 1inch) and 4x 7 segment (2.3") displays?
Or should i look something else?

and one last thing. Is there any way to attach those screens without gap between each other?

They have locking mechanism to secure themselves together and should leave no gaps.

You can use a 16X2 LCD as well but visibility is less as it also consumes less power.
