Display rs232 output to 16 X2 Lcd display

HI , I M ABSOLUTELY NEW FOR ARDUINO BOARD.
I don't have any idea about the arduino board
I have search lots on Google for interfaceing serial device output directly display on 16 x 2 display using baud rate 9600...

I HAVE ,
1)ARDUINO UNO BOARD,
2) 16 X 2 LCD DISPLAY

SO,

i have serial device that generate serial string, that string i want to directly display on 16 x 2 lcd display, that serial string updates every 5 sec...

I have to display string using arduino uno board,

SO PLEASE HELP ME FOR ABOVE PROJECT WITH CODE..PLEASE SUGGEST ME IF I REQUIRE ANY OTHER BOARD ,

THE STRING EXAMPLE ----> DD120120164501 1234.9
