I was wondering if it would be possible to get a list of software tools pinned at top of this thread. As a newbie to Displays I think it may benefit all. I have come across emulators but am currently unable to find any. It would be nice to know what the general consensus of use is.

The software tool is pinned to the top of this page - that stupidly persistent nuisance waste of screen space aqua bar with the Arduino symbol, third item is "Download" which lets you install the Arduino IDE.
Emulators are rubbish in this realm. This is about microcontrollers - you get the microcontroller, you write a program for it, you try out the program, you make corrections until it works. It's pretty straightforward. Until you have the hardware, you cannot possibly iron out all the quirks.
