first.... start a fire.....
then, take the three pinned fire sensor
connect it to something
read the output.
You could reverse the sequence, but I find that necessity really motivates people.
As for the "connect it to something" this is where lots of details are needed.

When it goes up in smoke you are in the fire so the distance is then 0!
