Hi,
I am completely new to Arduino. I am looking to create a device which will be mounted on the cherry picker platform and could measure the distance to the ground.
Could you please suggest which sensor shall I use?
Cheers

Will there be a person on the cherry picker platform?
Below it?

The Platform is not always directly over the ground, it goes over the roofs etc. I believe the reading will be wrong.

Ideally, device will be mounted on the platform and operator will be on the ground receiving readings wirelessly
So, pretty much an invitation to a demolition derby.
Get a proper industrial solution.

You probably right, but I am not ready to give up yet

OK, just post your postcode, so we know where to avoid, or send flowers.
"Goes over roofs"?
What do you care about the distance to ground, if an entire building is in between?

A surveying quality GPS, not cheap.

Plus a survey of the ground level underneath the buildings. May require some inventiveness to create ground levels that haven't existed for the life of the building.
If you could measure the angles on the various axes and know the distance between joints, I'd think you should be able to put together some math to compute the elevation. Make it a geometry problem.

Isn't the distance between platform and that roof more important than the distance between platform and ground?

It's for telecoms, it is crucial to know the distance from the ground.
How fascinating!

How many more details are you hiding from us? If you want someone to be able to help you with a solution then come on out with what you are doing. Stop making us guess and then shooting us down with details you didn't share to begin with.
GPS isn’t accurate enough on altitude. Plus with rise and fall of the ground you would never get correct height even if GPS was accurate.
I am not hiding anything, I didn't think that you would be interested in all the procedures.
When telecoms considering where to install new transmitters or modify existing sites, its crucial for them to know the hight from the ground to do their calculations.

So how do they do it now and what is the problem with this method ?
They estimate, and is not always working. Need to increase precision.

I own DJI Mavic drone, and it shows it shows what is the distance from the ground, not sure how it works and how accurate it is. Never thought it can be so complicated, but thank you for your responses

Especially with existing sites it's a matter of having a long enough measuring tape (why don't they know the height from ground in the first place?).
For new sites it'd be a matter of getting a pole of the correct length.
If you need to know the height of a building, a call to the building's owner or manager is usually the quickest way of getting its height - and you have to call them anyway to start negotiations on renting the rooftop.
I must be missing something here.
