What interests me even more, what are the advantages of a decent and simple push-pull circuit in contrast to my BSS138 approach

also, you can look at it like this, Push pull is hard HIGH or hard LOW.
An open collector/ open gate is hard LOW but floating to HIGH. This floating takes time.
