do i need a mosphet transistor to run a small dc motor

im making a project and i am using a dc motor do i need a transistor or can i go without one

Yes, a transistor & diode is needed.

Take a look at how a motor is being controlled here https://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=624751.msg4232292#msg4232292

(link may have an extra %22 stuck at the front and drops the : , I can't seem to post without it getting added)

Motors use loads of current, you always need a transistor/MOSFET/relay/IGBT/thyristor/whatever to drive one. To pick a device you need to know the nominal and stall current of the motor.

What motor do you have?

What SIZE motor?

Depends on what you want to do with that motor.

A simple switch works great for my 560W angle grinder. No MOSFET (or TRIAC, it's AC after all) in sight!
