Do I need a motor shield to control a stepper motor

I am wanting to design a project to control a stepper motor.

Do I need a motor shield to control a stepper motor or can this be done straight from the UNO

I am a complete newbie and just trying to identify the parts I need for purchase.

Thanks

try EasyDriver seems a popular choice

what setppers are you using?

If it's a really tiny stepper then yes. :) I doubt you'd be able to find that kind of motor though, so no, you are going to need something external to switch higher currents.

OK, so it seems I do need a shield. Thanks All

mmcp42: what setppers are you using?

I have not yet identified a stepper to use but the one I have looked at (well the only stepper that Arduino supplier here in the UK seem to stock) is the http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9238

One question I did read about a while back on the main Arduino site but can not find it now is what happens if you have completed the project and want to use it out in the field, do I still need the Arduino UNO or can I (as I thought I had read) was replace the Arduino with a Mega Controller chip. Any pointers to tutorial about this would be great.

steppers (not setppers - sorry bout that)

you could also try zapp for steppers they have quite a range, £10 for the NEMA-17

and ProtoPic for drivers

Not a shield as such but some sort of driver. This can be a simple driver that just turns coils on and off and the arduino supplies the intelligence for the sequencing or a module that generates the sequence from a step and direction input. There are two types of motor, bipolar and unipolar, they require different circuits to drive them. http://www.thebox.myzen.co.uk/Workshop/Motors_3.html and http://www.thebox.myzen.co.uk/Workshop/Motors_4.html Give you the theory http://www.thebox.myzen.co.uk/Hardware/CNC_Conversion.html Will give you an example and also so places (link) to buy motors. There are lots available in the UK. This is just one example of both motors and drivers http://www.rapidonline.com/searchresults.aspx?style=0&kw=stepping

Thanks for all the info.

Off to buy me some kit now. :)

my project is quite the same basically is a garage door to be opened using pc(Xbee module and andruino board) I need a processing interface with my software like two clickable buttons(open and close) to control the garage door couls you please help me with my code or give me any similar codes to work on I am using: 000469 X1 stepper motor with cable 9.99

Arduino Uno Stock Code : 000583 X1 £20.58

I have just brought the oomlut ARDX kit (to play around with to get more knowledge of the UNO etc), a 9v main adaptor,1 EasyDriver Stepper motor driver and 2 NEMA 17 Stepper motors (0.9deg = 400 Step)

Thanks for the replies
