does 5v 8mhz arduino work out of the box?

Hi again all,

I have made an arduino clone at 5v, and have run out of 16mhz resonators, so I picked a 8mhz one instead. I can program it, the sketch seems to work, except I get garbled serial output. Can this be related to the frequency and voltage? I have programmed it as a lilypad, since it's 8mhz, but does the voltage interfere here?

but does the voltage interfere here?

No it's just the frequency. The lilypad runs on a lower voltage and that means it can't run at 16Mz so they run it at 8MHz. However the bootloader is different.

except I get garbled serial output.

Yes you will.

Thanks Grumpy,

Aha, is that because the 328 is programmed as an arduino and used as a lilypad? Is that why the serial output is garbled?

Joachim

It will run at half the speed calculated for UART; the voltage is irrelevant (well, the AVR does not clock up to 16 MHz at 3,3V, but that's not your problem). You can adjust the code for that.
