Door contacts question

Hello,
Forgive me for being a complete newbie to hardware interfacing - I'm a software developer and never ventured into the hardware world. I was wondering though, if I have some door contacts ( http://www.adtsecurity.com.au/__data/page/38679/Door_Contacts.gif ) where you connect 1 wire to the first part, and another wire to the second part, you have a circuit when the door is shut. Would it be easy to use the Arduino USB Board to do 1) play an audible sound when the circuit is cut, and 2) send something through the USB that the computer could pick up notifying it of the change? There are also door contacts that the circuit is only complete when the door is open that I could get if that would make things easier.

have a look at the pushbutton tutorial on the main Arduino site. Once you get that working, you can add some code to send the switch state over USB.
