Drive addressable LED strip

I'm am VERY new to arduino. I need to drive an addressable LED strip, with a total of 300 LED's. I am using a HC-SR04 ultrasound distance sensor, and can receive distances that will be used to manipulate my LED's. Can anyone help guide me in beginning to program the LED's to be addressed by the measurements?

Adafruit has addressable LED strips. They have great documentation and support.

There is a wonderful sticky post in the programming forum on a methodology for writing an understandable sketch.

I am not really sure what you are trying to accomplish? You measure a distance and illuminate a certain number of LEDs based upon the distance?
