Drop in chip is not letting me upload sketches but is running fine

Hi all, I bought a ATMEGA328p from ebay, already programmed with the bootloader. It also has the blink sketch running on it. I was hoping to use my uno to act as a programmer so i could download a sketch that I want to run in a standalone project.

When I put the processor in the uno I can see the blink sketch starts up but I cant download to it. I get this error avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00. When the IDE is trying to upload I see the RX led flash a few times then nothing and the blink sketch continues to run.

I have just put the original 328p back in the same board and that will upload fine.

Is there something vital I'm missing or is it likely to be a dodgy processor?

Try different board types in the IDE. They might have a Duemilanove bootloader, for example.

Thanks Nick! I feel really silly now but that was the problem

Many thanks again, saved me a headache

What version of the bootloader was programmed in the chip you bought?

It looks like it is not the same bootloader as your original Arduino.

Try selecting a different "Board" from the Tools menu. The Board is what determines the type of bootloader the IDE is expecting to communicate with.
