I am powering a DS18B20 externally (not powered by the 5v pin from the Duemilanove I am using) and I cannot get any readings (in either parasitic or non-parasitic power modes) unless I tie the ground in common with the controller. Is this a requirement for this device? My ultimate goal is to transmit the data on the data pin wirelessly.

Sorry that is not on as it will require two way communication, you can't do it wirelessley.
