Your "THESE" pushbuttons are normally wired between the Arduino pin and ground. The intermal pullup resistor is used.
In your picture, the belt drive looks very awkward. You don't need to drive both sides of the blue thing unless it is made of wet noodles. Make it rigid, from steel, aluminum or wood and drive one side.
