Duemanilove - Failed chip erase - Chip broken?

I have some old Ardunios Duemilanove.

With one I can’t upload anything. If I transplant the 328p from another Duemilanove (different brand) onto it, it works so I can upload sketches to the transplanted chip. So I guess something is wrong with the 328p.

So I try to upload the bootloader again. I followed https://support.arduino.cc/hc/en-us/articles/4841602539164-Burn-the-bootloader-on-UNO-Mega-and-classic-Nano-using-another-Arduino.

I get error “Failed chip erase”.

Trouble shooting section mentions two points for this issue:

1ts - “Make sure you’ve selected the target board in Tools > Board.” As I use the same kind (different manufacturers) I select the same in Step 7. (I am just a little irritate. I assume Step7 is just for the target board. The target is not connected to USB so I also didn’t change the Port which still points to the programmer)

2nd –“Make sure you’ve connected the RESET pin correctly” I triple checked.

So could be the 328p broken?

Could I just buy a new one and do the programming?

avrdude done. Thank you.

Failed chip erase: Hochladefehler: exit status 1

This indicates a communication problem.

Yes and yes.
