That is a great alkaline battery at 1.5 volts. My Nickel Metal Hydride AA cells are 1400 milliAmp Hours, but they are rechargeable to 1.2 volts. So 3900 mAH is more than triple the energy as my rechargeables.
1.5v * 3.922 Amps * 3600 seconds = 21000 Joules of Energy
1.2v * 1.4 A * 3600 sec = 6000 Joules of energy
D cells can be rated at 14 Ah, but at very low discharge rates.
4Ah for an AA doesn't seem unreasonable.
Compare a battery cost to a wall socket's electrical cost :
1 billion joules costs $120 from my wall socket.
How many batteries will give that much energy?
1 billiion Joules / 21 kiloJoules per AA battery = 47000 AA batteries
So find the value of the batteries to compare to a wall socket :
$120/47000 batteries = $0.002 per battery.
But batteres cost $1.50 for an AA cell, not .2 cents.
According to this calculation, batteries are 750 times more expensive than a wall socket's electricity.
Maybe more, but sometimes portability is needed.

The shelf life of alkaline batteries can reach 7 to10 years. If a load is put on the battery, yes, they can drive a small load for 7 to 10 years.

Running at 1 Ghz, it uses one microjoule per second. So the AA cell with 21000 joules can last for 21 billion seconds, unless that is more than the shelf life of 7 years.

Alkalines do not generally like really high discharge rates. It plays havoc with their chemistry. I see no reason to to believe these are substantially better in this respect. If you need high peak discharge rates, Lithium are probably still your best bet, even though they are ridiculously (and unnecessarily, IMHO) expensive.
