The Arduino is only permitted to draw 500mA from USB. The laptop will cut it off if it sees more.
So, find the datasheet and check the rating on the sensor.
They only pull about 30mA so it should run fine off an UNO powered from USB. That’s why I think it’s a short to ground somewhere.
It would be worth checking the value of the resistor with a multimeter too.
