BTW, the above is incorrect. It should be:

volatile byte* ptr = &ADCSRA;

Thanks - good point. Actually this can change even though you have interrupt disabled.
Now I got a bit confused again. Yes, ADCSRA can change, but the pointer is like a constant for system.
