I started, but haven't followed up, on a similar, but smaller project to stir yeast starters for homebrewing beer.
I used only 4 magnets, but I used an H-Bridge to swap the polarity of each to spin the stirbar.
It's not exactly what you're looking for, but should serve as 'proof of concept' at least.
