Endless red dots on the left-hand side of IDE

this one is new.

i can no longer highlight text in the ide, every line i click on gets a little red dot just to the left of the line number(some are flashing hatefully), and now the ide windows no longer maximize.

what unknown key-stroke combination boned me this time?
any ideas?
i can run a bunch of other programs, but arduino just needs me to constantly restart my machine.
between this random crap and the endless and unsolvable "can't open device" i lose so much time. lol
i had no idea the stupid ide was such a demand on my system.
