Depends on exactly what you are actually trying to do, you did not say.
what range did you get so far ?
what range are you trying to get ?
line of sight is pretty far, what obsticles do you have ?
what are you trying to send ? an on/off? or steams of data ?

ESP8266 is very different than nRF20L01 and they are not interchangeable.
ESP8266 is WiFi protocol. nRF24L01 is a data transmission system, not Wifi. They both are on the same 2.4 GHz band is all.
