ESP2866 and CH340, port not recognised to program

Hi
Situation is Win11 PC running Arduino 2. Device LOLIN (WeeMos) D0, R1. or any generic ESP2866 device.

CH340 driver installed and seen in Device Manager.
Device recognised by any selected port (in device manager).
BUT
IDE reports "Port not found" in serial monitor or programming mode.

Serial on a terminal is OK.

AND

Device works OK on a Win 10 PC running same CH340 driver.

To maintain my sanity any pointers gratefully received.

Linux usually resolves problems like that.
