ESP8266 Board Not Showing Up in Arduino

Hey everyone,

I can't get the ESP8266 board to show up anymore in Arduino. Had it working just a few weeks ago but not anymore.

When I go into the Boards Manager it does even show up under there.

I was using Arduino 1.8.5 but I tried installing 1.6.12 and 1.8.4 just to see and no luck. Anyone know if this is a known issue or have any tips how to get it working again.

Appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Matt

In your File > Preferences > Additional Boards Manager URLs, do you have this URL:
http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json

Hey thanks for your reply.

Yes I do. I searched through a few older forums on the topic and added some alternative URLs that were used on occasions when that URL was down.

As I say, I was having no problems with it just a few weeks ago.

Did you do that before or after things stopped working? Because having multiple URLs for the same package seems like it could definitely cause problems. You can try opening the official URL in your browser to make sure it's available.

Do this:

  • Tools > Board > Boards Manager
  • Wait for downloads to finish
  • Click "Close"
  • Examine the contents of the black console window at the bottom of the Arduino IDE window. If there were any problems downloading the ESP8266 JSON file from the URL then there should be some error messages shown in the console.
