ESP8266: Timed out waiting for packet header

I've read multiple posts on this issue but not found a fix for me.
I've installed Arduino IDE and uploaded a few test scripts to a Wemos D1 mini and it worked fine. Added a sensor and uploaded another simple script but now I get the error:
A fatal esptool.py error occurred: Failed to connect to ESP8266: Timed out waiting for packet header

I tried reinstalling various versions of CH340 driver, downgraded the ESP driver to various versions, unpacked a brand new D1 mini board in case I had added an unwanted connection, started all over on another PC. Can someone help me? Also tried different USB cables. Did I really manage to break one board while soldering and unpack a defective board? What gives?

Show a schematic showing exactly how you wired the added sensor as well as any other hardware connected to it. Also post links to the technical information on the hardware items.

I tried this hack of an Ikea device soldering D2 to the sensor REST connection.

But I also tried a new Wemos.
