Greetings:I am attempting to connect my D1 WiFi ESP8266 based module but it does not show up under the board menu which is selected from the Tools tab.I tried to load "http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json"in the "Additional Boards Manager URLs:" under the Preference tab but it is already there in place. The thing is I can't over write it even if I wanted to.Then under the Tools tab the board page will not accept the esp8266 entry. So what am I doing wrong ?????.........franklom50

I tried to load

It’s not clear what you mean by “I can’t over write it”. However, you do want that URL where it is.
Then under the Tools tab the board page will not accept the esp8266 entry.
Please explain exactly what you mean by “the board page will not accept the esp8266 entry.” If you are seeing any error messages then post the full error here.
On an unrelated subject, C:\Users\franklombardo\Downloads\CP210x_Windows_Drivers_with_Serial_Enumeration\x86 is surely not a good choice for your sketchbook location. It appears that you were flailing about trying to install the drivers. The sketchbook folder is the place where libraries you install via the Arduino IDE are stored. The sketchbook is also a convenient place to save your sketches because they will then appear under the File > Sketchbook menu. If you one day are clearing out your Downloads folder and delete that driver download that you seemingly have no more use for you will be very confused and distressed to find that all your sketches and libraries have mysteriously gone missing.
greetings: To answer your question as to what I mean by"I can’t over write it". If I click the Preferences tab and cursor down to where the “Additional Boards Manager URLs:” is located, that option is already filled with this line “http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json”.That’s what’s supposed to be there but if I drag the cursor over that statement and attempt to copy or delete the line it will not allow a copy or delete. Not that I want to but just to see if I can over write that line by coping and pasting the same line from another source.Moving on,what I mean by “the board page will not accept the esp8266 entry” when I select the Tools tab and cursor to the Boards Manager option I get the error “Error downloading http://downloads.arduino.cc/packages_index.json”.The question at this point is what do I type to get the ESP8266 option in the Boards menu???..frank

That’s definitely not right. I also don’t like that there’s a " ," after the URL, though that is probably not a problem. If you click the icon next to the input field can you then edit in the dialog that pops up?
I select the Tools tab and cursor to the Boards Manager option I get the error “Error downloading http://downloads.arduino.cc/packages_index.json”.The question at this point is what do I type to get the ESP8266 option in the Boards menu???
When you start Boards Manager it first loads http://downloads.arduino.cc/packages_index.json before any additional URLs you have added in preferences. If it can’t download that file then it just gives up without trying any other. So I don’t think this is related to the ESP8266 URL and I believe you would get the same error even if you didn’t have that URL in your preferences.
Can you open this link on the computer you’re trying to install the ESP8266 package on:
After encountering the “Error downloading http://downloads.arduino.cc/packages_index.json” and then closing Boards Manager you should see some red text in the black console window at the bottom of the Arduino IDE window. Please copy and paste the full contents (you may have to scroll the console window up to see it all) here using code tags (</> button on the toolbar).
greetings::after clicking the preferences tab and entering this line “http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json” in the proper location,I will bring up the boards manager tab and an error message displayed in red below in the pop up window indicates ERROR downloading HHTP://downloads.arduino.cc/packages_index.json.This problem occurs while attempting to install on my laptop, however the installation works fine and successfuly on my desk top computer, all installations show up including the es8266 data.So obviously the laptop has an issue. Is this issue something you can help me correct???frank
DON'T CROSS POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=511195 I HAVE REPORTED THIS THREAD TO THE MODERATORS
I just disabled the firewall for a moment in order to re-attempt the installation but it did not correct the issue. Is there another option ??????????????? frank
greetings: is there anything else that has to loaded along with the arduino IDE software because the esp8266 options do not show up in the boards menu? all the other default options are there i.e. arduino uno etc. That option functions well with the blink sketch.what do you think???????
