Ethernet Shield Connection problem on Ubuntu

Hi Basically i am Stuck on this first step of connecting ethernet shield on ubuntu.
i have arduino UNO attached with the shield i have made manual ip settings on my pc and arduino.
Searched a lot for this problem Still not able to connect these to pls help.

PC ip adress:
192.168.1.17
mask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1

arduino ip:
192.168.1.18
255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1
