External power on motorshield question

Using an UNO with a sainsmart motor shield and have a question regarding external power. I think I am supposed to hook up my extrernal 9V adapter to the EXT_PWR on the shield. My questions are as follows;

  1. If I plug in the 9V adpter into the UNO power jack, does the power flow through to the shield?
  2. If so, does the shield power jumper remain in or do I remove it?
  3. If not, how do I power both the UNO and the shield with external power? Do I need 2 A/C adapters, one for each board?

Thanks

A link to the "sainsmart motor shield" is needed to see if the information required to answer your question is available or not, otherwise it would be just a guess unless someone has the exact same motor shield that you have.

I believe Adafruit's and the sainsmart unit are the same design.

Runaway Pancake is correct. The links he provided are the same board.

There's a section, "How to set up the Arduino + Shield for powering motors"
