Faking a string instrument?

allanhurst:
The violin and it's family have been around for a long time - do you think your device will be any improvement?

The instrument I'm building aims to copy and improve the range and expression of instruments like the violin or cello using technology. It won't be bound by the physical limitations of vibrating strings and wood. The improvement lies in the additional information from sensors, the instrument's entire form not needing to follow resonance constraints, and how the resulting design can be better for portability, ergonomics, and matching how people perceive music creation. Basically, more opportunities to lower to divide between the musician and the instrument.

allanhurst:
Without that investment in time, commitment ,training and enthusiasm, can you expect competant players to attempt the major string quartets of Beethoven, Mozart , Schubert etc or the gobsmackingly difficult and wonderful Sibelius concerto, or the Bach partita in Dminor - see Heifetz - using your device? And do it any better? or nearly as well?
Will major composers write concertos for it?
I doubt it.
to sum up - I think you're wasting your time.

I'm intrinsically motivated. I like discovery and mastery.
