Fast light/sound sensors?

Hi,

I'm building „Thunder and lightning catcher“ from my DSLR, can anyone recommend good and FAST light/sound sensors? (I know thunder comes after lightening, I need fast sound sensor for other purpose...)

I found some cheap ones on Ebay:
1st sound sensor
2nd sound sensor

Photodiodes
Photoresistors

Are these any good?

Basically I will be looking for spike in sound and light to activate a trigger event.

Thanks for help.

Hi,

You might google Arduino lightning detector

Not only is there sound and light but bursts of Electro Magnetic Radiation.

Back in the days of AM radio and analog TV, you could hear/see a thunder storm coming.

I had the simple issue with my canon 5d3 that is common to all/most DSLRs...
The response time from the trigger to taking a shot is 60-100ms+...in which time the lightning bolt had already dispersed.

That's gotta be a really really fast sensor and camera as you don't have much time. A typical lightning bolt lasts about 50 µs.

That pretty much means if you're trying to take an image of a lightning bolt by reacting to its appearance you're already too late.

I managed to catch a lightning bolt with an iPhone. Just held the exposure button for several seconds. Of the 100+ photos a few showed the lightning. As an alternative you could record a video and use the frames that contain the lightning
