FastLED on & off help

I have many effects in my code, and I am able to switch between any of them using buttons and stuff. I want to be able to turn my led strip on and off but when I turn it back on, the led strip goes back to whatever effect I last had applied.

As you're reluctant to share your code

1. How do you switch the strip off (FastLed.clear())? How do you switch it on again?
2. How does your code remember the effect? What do you want it to do when switching the strip on?
