FCC compliance, certification,

Hi. How is this board standing against the FCC regulations. I understand the Lora module itself is pre-certified, does it? But then, the mkrwan library modifies the Murata firmware which somehow compromises the pre certification.

What it takes to go through FCC? Any starting points?

Thanks, Marko

FCC certification is only done by commercial laboratories that test your device against the FCC standards and help you make any modifications necessary to pass the tests.
If the Lora module has been certified, but you use it in ANY other device, then the Lora certification is meaningless. Your new device is what must be tested and certified.
Any non-commercial device, something you build does not need to be certified. If you decide to sell the device, then the certification is required.
Google will help you find commercial services that provide FCC certification. The program will likely select a random quantity of devices from your first production run and test one or more of them.
In addition, any SOFTWARE changes in your device will require new certification, so be sure you are not considering software updates to your product.

Thanks Paul!

I'm no expert in this field so asking for directions. As I've been developing products that were later certified (although the process wasn't carried by me) that's my understanding:

  1. If the module is pre-certified my end product doesn't need to be certified for RF (ism) compliance. You only certify your end products and provide papers proving the module you're using is pre certified. This shorten the whole process and makes it way more cheaper. That's why I'm asking what's the status of the board MKR1310 as a whole or at least the Murata module.

  2. Although the product is not commercial, it's data or derivative is public. in my case windstation.eu, a windmeter based on arduino/lora, my understanding is that I still need to certify this product.

I guess I'll contact my local certification body. I'm just afraid a "hello" will be 1K$

Not a bit of $! They will point you to one or more PDF file that will explain your part and their part. Then you will both have a base to begin the conversation. The conversation is free.
