Feasability starting/stopping video playback when sound/silence is detected

I have literally no experience with Arduino, I have only recently heard of it; so my question is:
Is there a way to program the arduino to start, stop, rewind/fast forward music being played from a media player, that is connected to a speaker, using a button or knob? (Rewinding/fast forwarding not necessary but would be interesting)

I can describe what I want to happen:

I'm making an installation using music a video. I want the viewer to press a button that starts or stops a media player playing music. The noise from the music in turn starts or stops the media player playing the video, that is connected to a Projector via HDMI or VGA (Preferably HDMI); when sound sound decibels reach a certain point, the media player will play the video.

Sorry if my question seems vague, like I said, I am totally new to arduino and am just looking for some help on my art project.

Does your media player have a control input port of some kind or just buttons ?

If it dosn't then you can do all that with your laptop or computer. You use the Arduino to sense the button presses and then send a message to the computer. Then a program running on that interprets the messages and plays / stops or what ever the media. The language called Processing is good for that.

Alternatively the computer board called a Raspberry Pi can do all that in one $35 board. Without needing a laptop.

Would I need an Arduino in addition to the Raspberry Pi board?

No the Pi will do it all. If you get a Pi Zero then it is even cheaper.
