Finding angle of a shaft with Trigger wheel

My project has no camshaft I was speaking on how trigger wheel data is used on automotive applications.

Have a look at autosportlabs web site . Megajolt ignition uses the same trigger wheel and doesn’t use a cam sensor .
It’s an open source project so you should be able to find something there .

Basically the teeth give you rpm data and the missing tooth a datum - usually set at 90 deg Before TDC for no1 cylinder , so the system has advance notice of TDC , allowing it to advance the timing as required . So based on that you can accurately get a position based on the toothed wheel.
A wasted spark system is used so 1&4 and 2&3 on a 4cyl engine are fired as pairs . So camshaft position is not needed .
