Firefly has Landed!

A Texas company, Firefly Aerospace, just successfully landed on the Moon. First commercial company to have a completely successful landing. Hopefully a first photo soon!

Yes!, waiting for the photos .

I read that they added extra effort to be able to survive the lunar night (14 days) which can be quite cold (fortunately there is no wind so no wind-chill factor).

Lo-res first image.

That's a top down view of one of the RCS thrusters.

Looking forward to when they can bring rock samples back!

Yes, I'm excited to see how successful that is as it's no mean feat.
This is a great example of what a commercial company can accomplish as the mission cost was only 10% of what it would have cost NASA to do it. You can have a lot of failures and still do meaningful work for that kind of risk/return ratio.

That's going to be a while but in the mean time they can learn a lot with in situ analysis.

Well, that was an exciting landing! Time to get some sleep and by morning hopefully get some good images and some science.

Due to be a classic shot.

Obligatory "shiny!"

I stayed up for the landing but fell asleep before any pictures came down. Did the contact sensor on the 4th pad ever come on?

I was curious about that myself. There was mo mention of it in this mornings press conference and I haven't seen anything in print. It may be that the break-wire sensor is not reliable and will need some attention in future missions.

They probably forgot the put the book on board that they use for wonky table legs.
OR
They got the sensors from AliExpress.

Tom.... :+1: :coffee: :australia:
