First robot--motor to wheel help

I have googled everything i can think of and it has been surprisingly unhelpful. So here i am. I am trying to make my first robot using the arduino uno r3 and two dc motors. I am using a ping pong paddle for the chassis. I have two dc motors, which are different sizes, so I will get another small one soon. I am plannign on making my own wheels. My real question is : how do i connect the motors to the wheels? Also, are motor shields actually necessary? I would like to avoid buying one. I do not care about speed control. I just want to make it move

the electrical connection require some kind motor control circuit. A relay, a L298 shield or a power transitor .. and a diode.

Make your own wheels ? How ?
Look at the picture attached bellow...I think you should use something like that !!
Yes, a motor driver/Shield is necessary, you can find some cheap ones !!!

okay i will buy http://www.amazon.com/Arduino-compatible-L298N-Driver-Shield/dp/B00AF2IR6M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1403991424&sr=8-2&keywords=l298+shield
but where do i go to buy those wheels? and how will the motor PHYSICALLY connect to the wheels? thank you both

If you look around the web you can find some ready kits like the one here : Recommendations For You - DealeXtreme

thats a little too..pre built for me. Id like to assemble the chassis myself. also, a little pricey

When in doubt, Legos or Erector Set.

Or if you really want to build your chassis, you can use wood or other such materials.

If it's pricey , then you can buy a simple and cheap RC car and customize it as you want ..
