first time user. need advice on a simple rf repeater

I am thinking about making a simple repeater controller.

here is what I am looking to do... I have a duemilanove, and a radio shack 276-1326 20 second voice recorder module.

I want to have the arduino start the recorder when it senses audio from a radio, and record for the length of time that there is audio (up to 20 seconds). when the audio stops, or the limit is reached the arduino should "press" the push to talk button, and 1 second later press the play button on the voice module, and at the end of the recording release the push to talk.

Also would need the arduino to generate a morse code "ID" every 10 minutes or something slightly less than 10 minutes.

The problem? I dont know where to start!

any help out there?

Ok, I found a few links that might be helpful or give you some Ideas of where to start. One is the manual, the other two are other projects that use the radio shack voice recorder. Looks like you can only record one sound at a time, so I assume recording a second time would record over the first sound recorded.

Can you explain what a morse code ID is?

yes, i will be attempting to interface with a Kenwood th-22at hand held radio. I am looking to make a simplex repeater that I can power off a smallish battery for events.

I have seen some code for the actual module that I am going to use, but the tricky part as you pointed out is going to be the detection of the incoming audio triggering the recording.

Shouldn’t be too hard to design a audio detection circuit which takes the radio audio output, rectify it, filter and wire the resulting DC level to a arduino analog input pin where your software can read the A/D value and switch a digital output pin to start the recording, etc.

I suspect if you search out ham circuits for audio derived squelch circuits you should be able to adapt from there.
