First time user with project

Hey!

First time posting! I have no knowledge of Arduino/Electronics but I really want to learn.

I have a project in mind, to make a boxing timer (something like this: http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/titleboxing_2183_124810076)

The problem is I don't know where to start. I don't need help with the programming I just want to know which board should I buy and if there is something for arduino that does what does circular things do (the ones use to set the time, intervals etc).

Basically I just need some help with what parts to buy.

The knobs seem to be multi-way switches. You can read them like a switch matrix using three outputs and five inputs (8 data pins). You can probably just connect the Reset button to the Arduino Reset pin. The LED and, I'm guessing, Audio output would need two more pins. That's a total of 10 pins, well within the capability of the basic Arduino Uno.
