Flashing arduino mega over serial

Hi,

I have arduino mega that is connected via Max485 to an IoT gateway.

i need to be able to flash or update the Arduino Code and make changes without needing to be near the Arduino.

is this doable over the Serial, or i'll need an external component to be able to do this process.
