Flatbed scanner with hackable interface?

I want to experiment with using a flatbed scanner to directly scan images from a camera lens, kind of as a large-format scanning back.

Flatbed scanners typically reflectivly scan flat artwork. They have glass and lenses that focus to the glass surface, and they have CCFL or LED lights to light the subject. If I could remove the glass completely, and focus the image from a lens onto where the glass surface used to be (maybe I could mount the glass just for focusing, then remove it before scanning) then would I be able to scan the aerial image?

To do this, it would be good to be able to directly control the scanner through the scanner driver. Do you think this would work optically, and if so, what's a good scanner to use?
