It just happens to be that the MCF51CN micro only has the full MII interface with 18 pins required. This is probably the most common MAC to PHY interace. However, the Tower System will support the reduced MII (RMII) interface with 11 pins over the same MII elevator pins. You will see future FSL micros that have RMII support on Tower.
