Fresh Arduino install on a linux mint machine no communication with uno r3

I really cannot tell if there is a problem or not. I can do a lsusb and the uno r3 shows to be there. However when I attempt to configure the ide under tools the serial port is grayed out. However, I think this would be expected since I have nothing connected to the com port. The ide seems to have no provision for a usb port. When I try to do an upload to the uno I get an error message saying no com port connected. I have tried two usb cables so far.

I have uno selected under the tools menu.

The onboard chip is an atmega 328.

What is wrong?
