Fried part

I was messing around with my adafruit motorshield and i suddenly fried this part:

When i tried to clean the area, i accidentally ripped up the connections leading to it.

  1. What is the part and what does it do?

  2. Can i still repair it?

  3. If i can’t repair it, what is the cheapest place to buy a new uno/duemilanove?

You can download the design files for the Eagle from the Uno hardware page. Looking at the board file, that is the 3.3V regulator (LP2985-33DBVR).

Nothing on the Uno board requires 3V3, so the board itself should work fine. If your shield requires 3V, then you'll need to use an external regulator. (If nothing is using the 3V3, I'd wonder how the regulator got damaged.)

Suddenly might imply breaking a big rule with electronics: never change connections while power is applied. ;)
